Information gaining grounds is that those military officers involved in the attempted coup have been arrested, only one of them is at large.
A Gabonese government spokesman Guy-Bertrand Mapangou said: “Four have been arrested and one is on the run,” said Gabon spokesman.
It was reported earlier that some military officers seized Gabonese National Radio in the state in the capital Libreville and announced that the reason they did so is to establish a national council and to bring back real Democracy.
Lieutenant Kelly Ondo Obiang said that President Ali Bongo’s New Year’s Message “reinforced doubts about the president’s ability to continue to carry out the responsibilities of his office.”
However, President Ali Bongo is currently in Morocco, recovering from a stroke.
Reporters said they heard gunshots near the state television offices in the Libreville at the same time the military statement was being read on the radio.
A crisis is also hitting their neighbouring Congo and the attempted coup could cause more unrest around the region. U.S. President Donald Trump recently deployed American military personnel to Gabon so as to quench the unrest in Congo.
