Everyone would but wonder why women who are raped are been punished for being raped.
This is a normal thing in the country of Mauritania with a large number of Muslims. One also begins to wonder whether Islam they practice there is not the one being practice in Saudi Arabia.
A victim of this whom name is withheld related her ordeal of how a man who made advances on her and she refused then the man later raped her, and she was jailed for breaking the country’s law against sex before marriage. She said:
“They said I was guilty. I don’t know why, I thought if I told the police what happened, they would put him in prison,”
The Aminetou Mint Ely of the Association of Women Heads of Family said it is rear for men to face trial for the case of rape against women but it is easy for women who were violated or raped to be jailed.
The Aminetou Mint Ely of the Association of Women Heads of Family was quoted as saying that “Once a woman becomes an adult, in most cases, they say she consented, the laws are open, and they facilitate the interpretation of rape as zina,”
Many who show great concern would advise victims not to report to the Police because they are sure to be arrested. Some were interviews and one was who name was withheld said
“If we know that a woman is going to be imprisoned, we tell her, ‘Unfortunately, the law does not protect you.’,”
“If you report it, he (the rapist) will be imprisoned, but you’ll be imprisoned too and it is most likely the rapist will be released later and you the victim will remain’’
