The Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB were protesting and carry their flags when the police arrived to stop them. But the IPOB resisted the Police and it caused a heated contest between them and the police. A policeman died on the spot and also an IPOB member lost his life in the process.
The IPOB were protesting for a referendum and the were numbering into the thousands. The protesters were seen hosting their flags in the Nkwo market in Nnewi when the police arrived. The protesters were chanting ‘no referendum, no election’. They wasted no time on attacking the policemen because of their large population compared to the police that came to them. The traders in the market ran for their life.
Mike Okoli the Police Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations in Anambra state said after the incident:
“I will confirm to you that we lost a policeman, an inspector in the clash. The DPO who went with him to that operation is hospitalised. I can’t tell you of any other casualties; this is the much I know.”
